HISTORY
Salta Gymnastics Club
started as Vincent Massey Gymnastics Club in 1979. A recreational
achievement program
was initiated by founder Dick Brooks with the coaching assistance
of Pat McRoberts. In 1980 a competitive program was introduced. Because
of limited
access to the school and daily set-up and take-down
of the equipment,
the club began to search for a facility of its own. Vincent Massey
Gymnastics Club became incorporated under the Societies Act of the
Province of
Alberta in June 1980.
On July 1, 1988 a portion of the former Racquet Time building was purchased
from Stober Consolidated. The Vincent Massey Gymnastics Club officially
changed its name to Salta (Southern Alberta) Gymnastics Club. Also in
1988, Salta
hired Eva Paniti as a coach. One year later Eva was named head coach
because of her incredible credentials: - 1974 Romanian Gymnastics National Champion
- Romanian Olympic Gymnastics Team Member 1975-1976
- Coaching degree in Physical Education from the University of Bucharest,
Romania
- NCCP Level III certified Women's Coach
- NCCP Level I certified in Trampoline
In 1995 renovations were required as Salta had
grown
substantially. A grant was obtained through the Community Facility Enhancement
Program. A diligent group of volunteers supplied 1154 hours of manpower
tearing down the walls of two racquetball courts to create one large
gymnasium. An above ground pit was constructed in another of the racquetball
courts
to accomodate safe training for vault, bars, and floor.
Further expansion has been completed again in 2004,
check out the renovations page for more details.
